Free download manager

0 comments Wednesday 29 February 2012

This download utility is surprisingly attractive and full-featured for a freeware product, and its operation couldn't be more straightforward. To download a file, just click a link in your browser or drag it onto the program's tiny, semitransparent window.
In our comparison tests, Free Download Manager beat out Opera's download manager 85Kbps to 53Kbps. Its automation features also are very good. Like other managers, it can automatically dial a modem, start a download, or shut down the PC. Unlike many of them, it also can change the number of connections depending on download speed, or disconnect and shut down the computer if a file is unavailable.
If you want to boost your download speed for free, this utility is certainly worth a try.

Solar landscape lights

The primary source of greenhouse gas emissions in the developing world comes from hazardous and expensive fuel-based sources such as kerosene*.   Kerosene lamps are responsible for the annual emission of over 100 million tonnes of CO2; each lamp emits one tonne of CO2 over the course of its five year life.

There is a different way – each Solar Sister lamp sold can replace one or more kerosene lamps, thereby reducing global carbon emissions on the scale of tens of thousands of tons.

Our aim is for each Solar Sister to sell 100 lamps per year.  If we project this forward over five years, we not only help each Entrepreneur to build an independent income and bring light to hundreds of homes across Africa, but each Entrepreneur will directly remove 30 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Elephant fence in Malawi

1 comments Thursday 16 February 2012

A 12 km stretch of solar-powered electric fencing has already been erected along the eastern boundary of  the Thuma Forest Reserve to avoid deadly confrontations between local farmers and marauding elephants.

However, confrontations  continue south of the already established fence and the community is appealing to urgently extend the elephant-proof fence for another 24 km.

This fence will not only save the community crop losses from elephant raids but also protect the Thuma elephant population from angry farmers.

Brown_Pelican

 Characteristics

The brown pelican is about four feet in length. It has a brown and gray body and a white head with a light brown crown. Its neck is dark brown during breeding season. Young pelicans are all brown. The brown pelican has a very long gray bill with a large pouch of skin. Its pouch holds two or three times more than its stomach can hold -- close to three gallons of fish and water! Males and females look the same.

  Range

The brown pelican can be found on the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf Coasts. On the Atlantic Coast, it can be found from North Carolina south to Venezuela. On the Pacific Coast, its range stretches from Southern California to Chile. After nesting season, it can be found as far north as British Columbia and Nova Scotia.

 Habitat

The brown pelican can be found in coastal areas like sandy beaches and lagoons. It can also be found around waterfronts and marinas.

 Diet

The brown pelican is a plunge diver. It drops from the air with its wings partly folded and dives into the water to catch its prey. It is the only species of pelican that does this! It uses its bill and pouch like a net. It scoops up fish and water. It strains out the water from the sides of its bill, tips back its head and swallows the fish it caught. It doesn't carry fish in its pouch; it only uses the pouch to scoop up fish. Sometimes gulls will try to steal fish from the pelican's pouch. In fact, they will even perch on the pelican's head and wait for just the right moment to grab a fish! The brown pelican eats menhaden. herring, mullet, sheepshead, silversides and other fish. It also eats crustaceans.

Life Cycle

The male brown pelican selects a nesting site and then tries to attract a female with a display behavior of head movements. Once a female selects a male, the male will bring her sticks, reeds and grass for the nest. The female accepts the materials with a sway of her head and then weaves them into the nest. It can take over a week to build the nest. The nest can be built on the ground, in a tree or in a bush.

The female lays two to three eggs a few days after the nest is completed. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the young. The eggs are incubated in an unusual way. The pelican will put its webbed feet over the eggs to keep them warm. The chicks hatch after about a month. For the first 10 days after hatching, the parents will leave regurgitated food on the bottom of the nest for the chicks to eat. After that, the chicks eat regurgitated food directly from their parents' bills. If the nest is on the ground, it may be a simple scrape in the ground or it may be made of sticks, reeds and grass like a tree nest. the chicks will walk around outside the nest when they are about a month old. If the nest is in a tree, the chicks will leave the nest when they are between two and three months old.

  Behavior

Pelicans live in flocks made up of males and females. In flight, they glide in a V formation or in a straight line formation with their necks folded against their shoulders.

Latin name

Accipiter nisus

Family

Hawks, vultures and eagles (Accipitridae)

Overview

Sparrowhawks are small birds of prey. They're adapted for hunting birds in confined spaces like dense woodland, so gardens are ideal hunting grounds for them. Adult male sparrowhawks have bluish-grey back and wings and orangey-brown bars on their chest and belly. Females and young birds have brown back and wings, and brown bars underneath. Sparrowhawks have bright yellow or orangey eyes, long, yellow legs and long talons. Females are larger than males, as with most birds of prey.

Where to see them

Sparrowhawks breed in woodland but also visit gardens and more open country. They can be seen in towns and cities, as well as rural areas. Listen for the alarm calls of smaller birds as they spot a sparrowhawk and will alert other birds in the area to the danger. In the UK sparrowhawks are found everywhere, except for parts of the Scottish Highlands, the Western Isles and Shetland.

When to see them

At any time of year; you might see birds displaying to each other in early spring, when males perform a 'rollercoaster' flight, climbing up and diving back down again to impress females.

What they eat

Mainly small birds, but 120 different species have been recorded. Males can catch birds up to thrush size, but females, being bigger, can catch birds up to pigeon size. Some sparrowhawks catch bats.

American Flamingo

Audubon's flamingo is a stunning image. Its vibrant deep pink is set against the faint blue of a bright, hazy sky and the completely still water reflecting it. Audubon encountered the birds in Florida in 1832 and, while thoroughly excited by the sight of them, was annoyed by their shyness that often prevented him from approaching closely. The ornithological detail sketches of bill, mandible, tongue and feet are of particular interest and are indexed at the bottom margin of the plate.

The 435 paintings in Audubon's Birds of America constitute the most important achievement of ornithological art.
Audubon combined artistic and scientific talent to produce images that are as beautiful as they are important for their recording of carefully observed ornithological detail. His unprecedented use of richly rendered natural environmental detail created striking contexts for his gracefully composed birds — all of which are presented in actual life size. Each image has the feel of a snapshot that captures a living moment.
Audubon's passion for ornithological discovery and observation led him to explore large swaths of 1820s and 1830s America, especially throughout the South and the Ohio River valley. In 1826 he brought his enormous folio of large-scale paintings to London where, from 1827 — 1838, they were engraved by Robert Havell & Son and hand-colored in an edition of approximately 200. King George IV of England, King Charles I of France, Daniel Webster and many important museums and institutions of higher learning were among the subscribers to this original publication.

Hirundo viridis Illiger, 1811, Sandwich Island; error = eastern Brazil.
This species has in the past been placed in its own family, Tersinidae, and in a subfamily Tersininae of present family.

Molecular-genetic data indicate that it is embedded within present family, and forms a monophyletic group with Dacnis and Cyanerpes; all three genera have sexually dimorphic plumage, but present genus differs in broad flat bill, skeletal elements of palate and tongue, long wing, hole-nesting behaviour, and migratory habits. Three subspecies recognized.

(Ramphastos toco)
Toucan is the Brazilian name for a bird of the tropical American family Ramphastidae, characterized by their huge but light beaks. There are 37 species of these birds ranging from Mexico to Argentina. Toucans are found only in the Western Hemisphere. These peculiar birds belong to the order Piciformes, all of whose members have feet with the first and fourth toes reversed, and all of which are cavity nesters.

The Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco) frequents the rain-forests from Guiana to Bolivia and northern Argentina. It is 25 inches long and is the largest of the Toucans. The beak, 8 inches long and 3 inches high at the base, is deep orange with a large black spot near the tip. The eye is surrounded by a bare orange space; the plumage is black except for the white throat, edged beneath with red.

The tail is nearly squar
The Toco toucan eats mainly fruit and uses its large bill as a tool for picking it. It also feeds on seeds, spiders, insects, eggs and an occasional lizard or bird. They nest in cavities high in forest trees. The eggs are pure white and the young, hatching naked and blind after 16-18 days, remain up to six weeks in the nest, cared for by both parents. When it sleeps, a Toucan turns its head so that its long bill rests on its back, then folds its long tail neatly over it.

Toucans often gather in large groups and chatter loudly and noisily, their calls being synchronized with the fast upward swings of their bills.

The Black-fronted Piping Guan, Pipile jacutinga

The Black-fronted Piping Guan, Pipile jacutinga, is a bird in the chachalaca, guan and curassow family cracidae This specics occurs in Atlantic Forests in south-eastern Brazil and adjacent Argentina and Paraguay. It has become quite rare in recent decades due to hunting and habitat destruction (BirdLife International 2004).

It is a large bird, some 63–74 cm in length, and similar in general appearance to a slim turkey with thin neck and small head. Pipile jacutinga is mainly black with a bluish gloss; it has a conspicuous white wing patch bearing 3 neat rows of tiny black dots. The large crest is whitish, and it has a red throat wattle with a dark blue patch at the front. Its naked whitish eye-ring and black-feathered face and forehead are unique in its genus. The legs and feet are red.
No other piping guan is found in its range, though the Gray's Piping Guan (Pipile cumanensis grayi) approaches it in Paraguay. This bird has a pale bluish pendulous wattle, a smaller wing patch, and an entirely naked white face and white forehead

Legendary, and for good reason. Claridge's has retained its old world deluxe charm even though there is more than a touch of "Fawlty Towers" about it. Sometimes the service slips up, sometimes the doorman is wonderful; at others, he could be arrogant and dismissive

This truly is a beautiful hotel and we found the staff and the service generally to be exceptional. Breakfasts were delightful, the only meal we ate at the hotel ( there are some excellent retaurants in the area) but we

car insurance comparison sites

There's a wide range of car insurance options in Australia, which is impressive for a country of our size. It's easy to become overwhelmed given the number of companies offering "the best", "the cheapest" or "the best and cheapest" car insurance, but there are a few things you need to consider before you commit to one particular insurer.

car insurance comparison sites

Sometimes, people compare car insurance when they're thinking of switching to another insurance company. In this case, a person has nothing to lose by asking their current insurer if they're able to match or surpass a cheaper quote from another company. Revisiting the terms of your present car insurance policy may also allow negotiation of better terms for you; there may be discounted premiums for drivers above 25 years of age. Tailoring your car insurance policy to match your personal requirements can make it even more affordable

Human brain region telling specifically of animals

1 comments Wednesday 1 February 2012

There is a region in the brain, known as Amygdala. It controls emotions of the people. According to a recent research, published in the journal of Nature Neuroscience, it has been found that Amygdala is the region related to “recognizing animals”.
In this study, 41 epilepsy patients were shown 100 pictures of people, landmarks, animals and certain other objects. During the photo showing session researchers analyze the responses of 1445 neurons in the amygdala and other regions of the brain and found that right amygdala contains neurons responding particularly to photos of animals. They found the firing of neurons of right amygdala took place in response to animals.
Neurons of amygdala start responding regardless of distance or degree of looking the animal, which can be of any category like dangerous or eatable or mammal or bird.
